Are you breaking image licensing laws?

image licencingI’ve been blogging for a while now and my biggest struggle has been images. I’m not a photographer, I’m a blogger and a writer. You may have recently noticed that nearly every image on my blog has changed.

I have come to appreciate that taking pictures from the internet that don’t belong under creative commons public domain license is wrong.

I really don’t want to explain the technical la-di-da behind it so I’m going to link to the blog post I read after I started the process of changing all the images on my blog.

My general paranoia has grown since I started working with images at work. Image crediting, licensing, permissions, size and quality, copyright etc. I have realised how unfair it is to use images simply after finding them on a google search. Bad Mariam.

There are images under the creative commons zero public domain license and for the most part these can be used personally and commercially without asking for express permission. From my understanding images under this license don’t even need to referenced back to the original author and can be edited and manipulated. Reading the image licensing policy for each individual/company is important.

There are many others and in due course I will do a post about them but the stock image sites I’ve been using for the moment are: Unsplash and Pexels.

I don’t claim to know everything. I’m still learning and I still have questions that need to be answered about movie posters and book covers – but I’m getting there. This is not legal advice because I am not a lawyer.

What do you guys think about using images from Google and using copyrighted images on your blogs?

  • Even I was taken aback after getting knowledge about this whole thing. And hey! even I use unsplash and pexels! There’s almost everything there that I need! 🙂

    Hi Mariam,
Brilliant article on image licensing laws. I’m a book blogger and this has opened my eyes! Where do you source the book cover images you use for your book reviews? I usually take my own pictures with my camera but am intrigued by this….
I’m a London based, muslim digital marketer taking her first steps into the publishing industry and would love to ask you some questions. Is there an email address I can use to contact you?
